Submitted 2011-08-30 02:08:19 Being a seafood lover, if you have been whetting your appetite with crab cakes, lobsters and shrimps, it?s time let to let your taste buds meet the clams. These popular sea stuffs have been dominating the American seafood outlets for years and now it?s time for you to get them right into your mouth. But first, you need to know about these small sea creatures.

Clams are picked up from sea shores. Therefore, the debris hidden inside the shells should be cleaned off before taking them to the kitchen interiors. There are certain ways of cleaning clams. Let?s take a look at the cleaning procedures:

Select the right ones?? First and foremost, reject all those clams that come in chipped, damaged, broken or opened forms. Remember, they don?t close while they are alive.

Soak the clam?? You must take at least two hours to soak the clams. Take a bowl full of heavily salted water in order to wipe off the tight sitting sand inside. Although the clams you buy may seem clean, it?s better to soak them. If you soak the clams in water, they can breathe and hence filter the water. All the sand along with the salt water is dragged out of their shells when filtered.

Scrubbing?? With the help of a wire brush, scrub the clam shells thoroughly since they hide under the sand. You should scrub well so that the remaining sand, grit, sand, barnacles, salt etc can be washed off.

Well, clams can be served either deep fried or you can enjoy by dipping them in bread crumbs prior to frying. There are some places where you will come across an exclusive range of crumbs that taste superb with clams. If dipped in tartar sauce, these wonderful sea stuffs simply thrill the taste buds. People from various corners usher in bulks to enjoy the unique flavor of this popular seafood.

Coming to a Maine lobster, some people consider it difficult to cook. But in reality it?s just the opposite. The ways of preparing lobsters are undeniably simple and those who are not even accustomed to seafood cooking can accomplish the job with ease. Whether you consider regular meals or five starred main course, Maine lobster?serves as a primary keyword for gastronomical delights.

Maine lobster can be prepared in two methods:

Boil: 6 inches of water should be taken in a pot. Boil it to the fullest and add about ? cup of salt in the boiling water to plunge the lobster with its head positioned first. Keep cooking the lobster in the boiling water and get the flame reduced to medium. When the shell turns bright red, you will realize that it has been fully cooked.

Steam: In a container, pour a few inches of water along with salt. Make sure that you provide a support in the pot so that the lobsters don't slip through the holes located at the bottom. Quickly boil the water and wrap the pot. Determine the dimension of the Maine lobster and accordingly boil it. Once done, simply switch off the heat and leave for not more than five minutes.

Cooking Live Fresh Lobster

One of the first things that you have to come to terms with in cooking live lobster is the fact that you will be the person that will place a living creature in water that is boiling. Most people feel squeamish about this. They are not sure they can do it. This is what makes cooking live lobster so different
.

When you buy chicken or fish or beef, the deed has already been done someone else. You do not see the animal alive and kicking. Once you do get over your uneasiness, cooking live lobsters are easy. And they taste way more delicious than the frozen kind.
You probably bought your lobster live either through a local seller or an online seller. Make sure that it is alive and kicking when it arrives at your doorstep. Ideally you should cook the lobster right away. If you are not going to, then you should place it in the refrigerator right away. Lobsters can live for a few hours outside of water.
When buying the lobsters, as much as possible try not to buy any that over a pound or pound and a half. Lobsters that are too large, end up getting cooked unevenly. So while some parts cook well, others do not. When you are ready to cook, make sure that you select a pan that is large enough to hold the lobster. Make sure to fill it with enough water to hold the lobster without the water spilling over. Bring the water to a boil where the water is rolling. Do not place the lobster in the water until it is hot enough that it is rolling.
Before placing the lobster in the water, remember to remove the rubber bands that hold the claws together. Grab the lobster firmly and place it head first into the boiling water. Be careful to not splash hot water over yourself. Once about half the lobster is immersed in the water, you can release it.
You will know that the lobster is cooked, because it will turn red. Or if you want you can see if the claws can be pulled easily from the body. If you can, this also means that the lobster is cooked. Remove the lobster from the pot and place it on a plate. Wait for it to cool down. Melt some butter. And enjoy your well deserved meal.

Cook a Lobster Dinner

Three dear friends and I, meet once a week to catch up on each other's lives. Each one of us takes turns hosting the dinner. Some week's it's a potluck. On others the person hosting decides they want to cook a meal for everyone. This time when my turn came, I decided to do something different. Two out of the four were going through some life troubles. It was winter. And the group definitely needed some fun and joy.

After going through and rejecting a lot of ideas, I finally settled on a lobster dinner. Not just any lobster dinner, but one where we cooked them live. We all love seafood. And cooking the live things seemed like the perfect adventure to bring out some much needed laughter. It was easy enough to order the lobsters online. A search online provided many reputable places from where I could buy them live. They arrived at my doorstep as promised within twenty four hours. They were still alive and kicking.
You should have heard the shrieks from my friends when they saw the live lobsters. At first they were apprehensive and were not sure if they could help cook. But soon they got into the spirit of the evening.
We used a classic, simple way to cook them. We boiled them with just a touch of salt and lime juice for taste. The shared cooking experience provided a lot of entertainment. From boiling the water to removing the bands from the lobster to carefully immersing them in the water. Each step made us be in the moment and forget our worries.
Try it the next time you need something to do to take your mind away from things. Better yet, share the experience with a group of friends.
